The Challenge
Black professionals remain significantly underrepresented in the technology industry.
Despite making up approximately 13% of the U.S. population, Black workers comprise only
about 3% of technical roles at major technology companies. This disparity begins early,
with lower representation in computer science education and compounds throughout careers
with barriers to entry, advancement, and entrepreneurship.
Why It Matters
Diverse teams drive innovation and create better products. When the tech industry lacks
Black perspectives, it misses opportunities for breakthrough ideas and risks building
technology that fails underrepresented communities. Addressing this inequality is both
a moral imperative and a business necessity.
Moving Forward
Progress requires commitment from organizations: investing in recruitment, mentorship,
inclusive workplace cultures, and supporting Black-led startups. Education initiatives
that begin in K-12 are crucial to building the pipeline for future Black technologists.
